Preparing for Christmas is a year long shopping ordeal
Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 1:26:52 PM by Rose Martins

The Christmas shopping season is what most retailers spend the whole year planning for and working towards, banking on the Christmas season to see their sales hit the high mark. Christmas shoppingWith Christmas barely behind us, retailers are already channeling their energies into December 2006.

Christmas shoppers prepare their Christmas shopping lists, months in advance and the more organized shoppers begin to shop for their Christmas gifts already in the summer, some even as early as Easter time.

Christmas shopping catalogues are also planned and prepared months in advance, ready for distribution a few months before the Christmas shopping season. Online shopping sites begin to advertise Christmas shopping specials way in advance.

Millions are spent each year on Christmas celebrations, and it's not just on gifts. People spend a fortune on Christmas decorations for their homes and cars, on new clothes for Christmas Day and on food for the Christmas day meal, or Christmas party.

Businesses also spend a fortune on gifts for clients, colleagues and employees, as well as a huge end of year Christmas bash.

Coldwater Creek tops the $1 billion mark

Women's clothier Coldwater Creek for the first time topped the $1 billion mark in sales in 2006, but the chairman said profits need to improve. The company, founded in 1984 as a mail-order retailer, has grown into a national brand with 239 stores in addition to its catalogs. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dennis Pence said the company failed to meet sales expectations during the fourth quarter, which included the Christmas shopping season. While the company outperformed many of its peers, more clothing sold at clearance prices, reducing profitability, Pence told analysts during a conference call last week. "One theory is that it was an electronic Christmas, that she (the customer) was more focused on the color of her iPod than the color of her apparel," Pence said....

The residents of Paint Lick are celebrating the holiday a little late -- to mark the homecoming of a National Guard soldier who spent her first Christmas away from home serving in Afghanistan. Shannon Dale returned yesterday to find businesses and homes decorated with trees, garland and twinkling lights. Residents waved flags and held a reception with cake, punch and hot chocolate. The effort called "Operation Homecoming," was led by Paint Lick resident Rita Fox. She came up with the idea after hearing that Dale's family planned to postpone their Christmas celebration until she got home. Dale says she didn't expect all the fanfare. She appreciates it, adding that she still has some Christmas shopping to do. The celebration continues Sunday, when the congregation at Dale's church sings Christmas hymns....

Gap boss sacked after Christmas misery

Clothing giant Gap has dumped chief executive Paul Pressler after a year of broken promises that culminated in a dismal Christmas shopping season. Pressler, Gaps CEO since September 2002, will receive a severance package valued at 11.2m as he walks away from the disarray that has dragged down one of Americas largest merchants. The San Francisco-based company, which owns 3,100 stores under the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic brands, has been struggling since the spring of 2004. As it became increasingly apparent that things were not improving, more investors became convinced Pressler would be ousted. In a statement, Gap said its board and Pressler mutually agreed it was time for him to leave. This was a long time coming, said retail industry analyst Jennifer Black....

HAVANA (AP) - A rise in holiday toy shopping set off alarm bells in Cuba, where the official youth newspaper warned that growing celebration of religious holidays could bring a rise in consumerism on the communist-run island. In a two-page article on Sunday, the Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported on the revival of "Three Kings Day," a Latin American tradition of giving gifts to children on Jan. 6 to commemorate the arrival of three wise men who according to the Bible offered the newborn Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. "A tradition that seemed extinct in Cuban society rises again," the state-run newspaper said. "Although no one sees celebrating the millennial festivity of the Three Kings as heresy, the danger could be in (the holiday) accentuating consumerist habits and social differences." Christmas is a low-key affair in Cuba, where the adoption of official atheism in 1962 led leaders to discourage religious celebrations....

Area shopping malls rallied on last weekend

The Milwaukee area's major shopping malls finished strong for the Christmas retail season after some slow days in the early going. Most malls and their tenants will not calculate firm sales numbers until mid-January at the earliest. However, informal traffic counts indicate the malls narrowly outpaced 2005, if still falling short of some predictions of a record-breaking holiday retail season. ....

Many children have built up a good nest egg for this years' Christmas shopping. Three in five children save more than they spend and a quarter (25%) save more than £5 per week, according to new research from Halifax. Despite having the lowest weekly income (£24.59) compared to the UK average (£33.59), children in the West Midlands look set to do the most Christmas shopping this year. Children in the West Midlands are the nation's best savers with three quarters (75%) stating that they save all their money or save more money than they spend. This is followed by Welsh children at 68%. Children in Yorkshire and Humberside are the worst savers with only 42% saving all of their money or saving more than they spend. In 2005, Welsh children were the worst savers with only 31% saving all of their money or saving more than they spend....

MILAN -(Dow Jones)- Germans and Italians plan to cut their Christmas season outlay by more than 6% this year, while the French intend to spend about the same as last year, Deloitte said Tuesday. In one of the first previews of the coming holiday shopping season, Deloitte found that euro-zone residents aren't about to rush out and celebrate the region's fastest economic growth in five years. Surveying almost 10,000 consumers in 14 countries, Deloitte found that Germans plan to cut their spending on gifts and gastronomy by 6.6% compared to last year, while the Italians intend to cut theirs by 6.2%. Holiday spending in France is likely to be stable. Declining purchasing power was cited as the primary reason for the restraint. Two-thirds of French and German respondents and 43% of Italians said they felt poorer this year, Deloitte said....
